What to Wear to Graduation

Last week I had my graduation for my Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics, and it was a fun day spent celebrating with family and friends. Since this is my second graduation I thought I'd share a few tips for picking your graduation outfit.

1. Think about the weather: Short sleeved might be the best choice

Since you are wearing a big graduation gown most of the day it is good to keep this in mind and not wear anything underneath that you will get too hot in.

2. Go for a colour or white, black blends all together

Last time I graduated I went for a bright pink dress, this time a deep port red. I saw a couple people wearing black dresses and though they were nice up close they lost their detail when worn in combo with the graduation gown. The advantage of white is that you know the colour wont clash with your hood colour and it still stands out from the gown. I saw a few people with outfits matching the colours of their hoods which did look nice but I can imagine would be tricky to match exactly.

3. Think about length

At my graduation they had a camera pointing towards you from a low angle as you walked across the stage. This, and the fact that people below you on the stage will be looking up towards you, leads to my suggestion that you go for a longer dress (or at least not a mini dress).

4. You don't have to buy a new dress

For this graduation I did buy a new dress, but last time I wore the same dress that I wore for my 21st birthday. Since the graduation gown does cover a lot of what you end up wearing it's not a big deal if you wear something you've worn before. Though it is nice to get something new for the special occasion, if you are on a tight budget or already have a dress in your wardrobe you really like then wear it!
