How to Afford an Overseas Holiday - Student Gold Coast Travel Tips
Last year I went on my first 'big' overseas trip. Although Australia isn't too far away, for someone who's only been overseas once when they were 2, it was an exiting trip. I spent 7 days in the Gold Coast with my good friends Erin and Eliza and we had an absolute blast. We saved up over the year and paid for the trip ourselves, but being students, we were on a bit of a budget. In the end the whole trip ended up costing me under $1500NZD (including flights, food, accommodation and all my spending money). So today I thought I would share some of my travel saving tips for if your a student wanting to go on an overseas adventure.
1. Book a cheap package deal
Always book in advance and hunt around for sales and special deals. We ended up booking a package through Expedia and got our flights, accommodation, airport transfers and theme park tickets for only $700!
2. Go during the off-season
Travelling during the off-season can save you a lot of money, especially with accommodation. You can end up with a way nicer apartment or room for the same price you would pay during peak season.
3. Cook your own meals
Eating out can quickly become a money pit. We booked an apartment that had a decent kitchen so we could make our own dinners. Packed lunches are also a good idea, especially if your going to any tourist destinations like theme parks where the food is likely to be very overpriced. Alternatively look for a place to stay that offers free breakfast to save some money.
4. Use public transport
Using the bus or a train is such an easy way to get around and it also will save you a few dollars. For example in the GC they offered shuttles to and from the theme parks, but it was way cheaper to catch the bus and just as easy (the bus stops were close by and came past every 10 minutes). Also when booking your accommodation keep in mind how close you are to the buses and trains so you don't have to worry about renting a car or taxi, you can just easily walk everywhere!
5. Hunt for free wifi
Instead of racking up a giant phone bill, look out for free wifi. Most cafe's we found in the GC had it, but when in doubt there is always Starbucks. My friend Eliza tried purchasing Wifi at the apartment and it was terrible. Free wifi all the way!
